Science

Science is the study of God’s wonderful Creation. As we study His complex handiwork, students will develop an abiding respect for God’s love, power, and majesty. The Elevate Science curriculum follows the California Next Generation Science Standards for students in grade six supplemented by additional information to help students develop a biblical worldview of Earth science. In Earth Science, students will be introduced to science and lab safety. There will be a focus on the different systems of the Earth, minerals and rocks, the history of earth, weather in the atmosphere, energy in the atmosphere and ocean, and the climate.

History

In History, we will study Ancient Civilizations from Creation to the rise of Rome. Course units are developed to meet the State of California History and Social Science Standards (http://www.cde.ca.gov) for students in grade six, but will be supplemented with additional information to help students develop a biblical worldview of world history. Students will focus on geography and map skills, creation and mesopotamia, they will also learn about Ancient Egypt, Israel,Greece and India. Additionally, they will learn about the rise of Rome and Roman Civilization and early church history.

Math

Our Math course is designed to provide students with the strong foundation required for success in Pre-Algebra at West Valley Christian School; our curriculum follows the Mc Graw Hill Reveal Math series. This course will cover concepts reviewing basic operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, then understanding how these concepts apply to ratios, proportions, percents, measurements, and statistics. Students will then advance into the basic foundational algebraic concepts of computations with integers, writing and evaluating algebraic expressions and equations, and exploring the coordinate plane. Students will additionally study geometric concepts involving understanding and identifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, then learning how to calculate circumference, area, and volume. Real-world applications in problem solving will be targeted throughout the course of the school year.

Literature

Our literature curriculum builds 6th grade reading comprehension by providing students with grade-level-appropriate selections that represent different genres, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences. To provide opportunities for biblical thinking, each unit is centered on a biblical worldview shaping theme. By following the Reading Process Approach within the textbook, students will develop the reading strategies and literary skills they need to comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and respond to each selection. In Bible, we will dig into the book of Proverbs. As we consider the principles outlined in this book together, students will find themselves better prepared to face the responsibilities and decisions that accompany young adulthood. Our prayer for our students is that as they study the wisdom of God in Proverbs and apply it to their daily lives, they will develop a deeper love for the Lord and desire to follow Him for the rest of their lives.
